“It is not given to everyone to have his private tasks of meditation and reflection so happily coincident with the public interest that it becomes difficult to judge how far he serves merely himself and how far the public good.” Immanuel Kant

the parochial serves the universal

Strange savior to only kin and kine
not caring for his fellows in the least
at consanguinity, he draws the line,
reserving hospitality to beasts.
But neighbors got no warning, no reprieve
If their own gods don't specify an ark,
they got surprised the day it's time to leave
succumbing to the flood, and mud, and Dark.
Concern for strangers dawns with Avraham
A Light until the Nations' something new
confronting God with his own moral qualm
Refocuses from "species" down to "Jew".
If not a "tzaddik", certainly a sage
this new protagonist for a new age.

amoral

Transactional relationships suffice
If you're a rich schlub looking to get laid.
No one has value, but each has her price
And one can always buy a passing grade.
Roy Cohn built a career within the mob
And mentored Donald in corruption's ways.
Morality had no place in that job;
nobody's wrong if he's the one who pays.
With no internet compass of his own,
He trusts one's worth the price for which he's bought.
Condemned to walk his  joyless road alone,
Trump lies awake in dread of getting caught.
No manly honor curbed his urge to steal
false authorship for "The Art of the Deal".

ronin

As Kochs retire, Pompeo's value wanes
he brings no insight, no great expertise.
As talent's fired, and only dross remains
it's less impressive that he aims to please.
In Kansas, it's enough to know a Koch;
the contracts others fought for came with bows.
He knew which bloated egos one must stroke,
when everything depends on whom one knows.
But now, his patrons face mortality;
he'll have to earn a living on his own.
The market's soft for empty flattery,
and Washington's a cold town, all alone.
What Kochs had groomed, a Trump may fire, instead
unless that silver tongue gives awesome head.

blow-out

Mike stayed aloof, and offered no defense
when tapes came out from AccessHollywood.
He'd known his running-mate was crude, and dense,
but now saw proof that Trump--at core's--not good.
This "shithole" outburst stokes his basest base
who pick and choose among the words of Christ.
The Baptists, who had come to blows on race,
now question if our leaders need be nice.
The 25th amendment's less than clear
what failings'd make a president unfit.
But Ships of State need someone sane to steer
who isn't morbidly obsessed with shit.
Aspiring to mere moral competence
increasingly, we'd settle for mere Pence.

treyf

Isaiah knew Rubashkin to a tee,
contemptuous of workers in his pay,
a Bronze-Age specimen of prophecy
as apt as ever, to this present day.
When Mammon's dearer than his fellow man,
the stranger, and the orphan in the street
are tools that he'll abuse, because he can
to sell what he purports is kosher meat.
His acts betray no ethical design;
morality's a word he leaves at shul.
As with his fellow, so with the Divine
too privileged to mind the Golden Rule.
When such a gonif's backed by leading Jews,
eschewing meat's a protest more will choose.

values voters

like cancers, Trumps grow on society
instead of mothers' milk, they pump out bile
resources others pay for, they want free
rapacity's their signature lifestyle
they'll steal from anyone outside their tribe
the only social group where they belong
devout Hegelians, they don't subscribe
to any universal sense of "wrong"
"It takes a village" Hillary expressed
her static vision of communal life
but Donald boasts that only he knows best
dictating terms to each successive wife
Roy Cohn laughs last, he took the lad to school
and left the world this antisocial tool
