dillettante

Trump hires the ones he thinks are not too smart
who won't speak out on what they've seen him steal
acclaiming his fresh lies as if they're art
as if his highest goal's to cut a deal
the confirmation battles loom ahead
each one's less competent than is the next
by now, the Senate staffers have re-read
just what "consent" entails in our core text
the Kremlin's favorite's ill-prepared for State
when carbon's got to be left in the ground
the Exxon stock-price and the planet's fate
if we're to have a chance, must not be bound
Trump's ego-driven need to keep control
presents a peril to our nation's soul

externalities

extractive industries foist off the cost
off ecosystems trashed to make a buck
each river dammed's a verdant eden lost
the frontier mindset couldn't give  fuck
deforestation forced  a shift to coal
and now our oysters strain to make a shell
the fossil carbon dug out of that hole
has made our oceans an acidic Hell
while Dyson dreams of planets where we'll roam
he disregards six thousand years of past
we've made a dunghill out of this, our home
what's irreplaceable's eroding fast
we fight for mansions on these hills of trash
we've built ourselves in the pursuit of cash

geopolitical

extractive industries tore up the West
the landscape's a cartoon of broken health
while foisting all the costs onto the rest
the Few monopolized a nation's wealth
Sistani voiced the wisdom of the East:
a nation's minerals belong to all!
so Rumsfeld heeded him not in the least
but gave his ExxonMobil friends a call
the elements of Eden form the Earth
but fair apportionment has been our bane
none need face penury by right of birth
if Justice were the goal instead of Gain
if planet Earth is not to be Hell-bound
those fossil fuels must be left in the ground
