"recovered memories" have undone lives
as if at thirty, one can really know
what had transpired when she was six or five
or time lends weight to what's still child's say-so
uncertainty inheres in all we sense
and passing years just add more cause for doubt
what's clear in one ear goes corrupted thence
a changeling by the time that it comes out

strict judgement without mercy damns us all
